Chapter 1 : Oyau Abing’s Strange Dreams
There was a place, far beyond the clouds.
A very peaceful and wonderful place. It was known as Lepo’ Dempau Naa Pingkan (The
sky kingdom). This is a story about a great man, Oyau Abing. Oyau Abing Lian
Padan was the powerful leader of that kingdom. There was also Balan Nyanting
Mijung Muan, a fast and mighty man. He was the greatest of all men in that era.
His other strong men are the lively Padan oley, Sinan Laing the great warrior,
Sinan Putik the fair skin warrior, and also the agile Laing Tit. There were two
men who were assigned to be the announcer and the bell ringer of that kingdom.
They were the brave Temuing Sedek and the cheerful Temuing Isit. There were
also two strong and wise fortune tellers, Oko Pampo’and his partner Pompen Ngajen
Leyran.

One day, Oyau Abing Lian Padan fell sick. He lied down
feeling feverish and tried to put himself to sleep. He fell asleep after a
while and he had a dream. He dreamt of a big bear, biting his knee and his
calf. Instantly, he woke up. “That was a strange dream.”he thought to himself.
Then he went back to sleep. As he closed his eyes, once again he had a terrible
dream. A venomous snake, encau liban, bit his heel. Again, he woke up feeling
horrified because of the dream he just had. Knowing it was just a dream, he
felt relieved so he continued sleeping. The nightmare came back. This time he
saw a very horrifying scene. There was a land slide that swiped away his kingdom.
He saw his kingdom vanished in that devastating catastrophe. The night passed by
but the entire nightmares still puzzled him in the morning. “All my life I’ve
never had so much bad dreams all at once. Why am I having these nightmares?”
wondered Oyau Abing Lian Padan. He had a feeling that something bad might
happen to his village.

Chapter 2 : Predicting Strange Signs
He sounded the alarm
(jatung adau) to call his trusted worrier“Dang, dang, dang, dang”. In a flash, Balan Nyanting Minjung Muan
arrived. Then, not long after that Laing Tit and Padan Oley also came. The
other great men also came and gathered there immediately when they heard the
calling from their leader.
Everyone wondered what
the meeting was all about. The brave Temuing Sedek stood infront of all and
said “Greetings to everyone.Listen carefully to my words. We gather here today
because our leader, Oyau Abing Lian Padan had strange dreams last night. He felt
that they were bad omen. Who are able to tell the meaning of his strange
dreams?” Everyone was silent. They also didn’t know how to interpret the
dreams.
“Kumin Oko Pampo mencam ngio’ ngimpang ngesan, laki pali mepan

“We have two strong and wise
fortune tellers. Oko Pampo’and Oko Pompen, can you tell us the meaning of the
Oyau Abing’s dreams?” said one of the people. Both of them came forward. With
no further delay, they performed their ritual in front of the crowd. They did
many kinds of actions in their ritual. They took out their machetes and swung
them to the air. They also placed an egg in the middle of a tawek (a gong).
Sometimes they lied down on the floor, sat on the chair and even did the bottom
up pose. Oko Pampuk did his wide-legged forward bend and then he asked those
people for a very weird favour “My child please hit my bottom.”
Several young men did as
instructed. Without hesitation, they hit the huge butt cheek, hard and as fast
as they could “bup, bup, bup, bup”. Soon after, a big explosion sound almost
similar to the bamboo canon filled the place. At the same time, they saw some green
stuff bursted out. Oko Pampo’ accidentally released a big fart along with disgusting,
watery feaces. All those young men who were hitting his bottom covered with
that smelly, green stool. “Oi…my child, calm down. Believe me, this never
happened before. It was unintentional. I think I was having diarrhea because of
the tapioca leaves with spicy chilly I ate earlier.” said Oko Pampo’. That
explained the green stuff secreted and sticked all over these young men’s body.
Those poor men ran to the river and quickly jumped in the water to clean
themselves. Oko Pampo’ continued his ritual as if nothing had happened. He
moved from side to side and looked up once in a while. Then he finally told his
prophecy “Oi…my dear child, there is a danger coming. The enemy from Lepo’
Dentak, Lencau Ca Aya Mata Pelesan is planning to start a war.” The people of
Lepo’ Dempau became so worried so they asked Oko Pampo’ “Oko, What should we
do? How are we going to face this enemy?”

Chapter 3 : Lepo’ Dempau searching for a big tree to make shields.
“Oi…we have to make
shields. Look for the hardest wood and the biggest tree so that we can make
shield for each and everyone of us.” “When I was just a little baby, I’ve seen
an Adau tree. I remembered the tree was just as small as a bullet shell. Now
that I am old and all my hairs turn grey, I think that tree might be a lot
bigger now”said Oko Pompen. As soon as Oko Pompen finished talking Sinan Putik
got up and said “While I went hunting at Maradian River I saw a really big
tree.It was so big that I can’t even hear my dogs barking from the other side
of the tree.”
Then Sinan Laing also
came forward to speak “Oi…I also saw a huge tree at the Toban Mato Mejalan
River. I was on my way to deliver news to people there. It was so huge that if
I hit the tawek (gong) from one side of the tree, people at the other side of
the tree can’t even hear it.” The talk went on for quite some time to find a
tree that was big enough to make shields for the intire kingdom.
As the crowd was getting
louder, Laing Ketumi and Laing Busik stood up to speak. “We’ve also had seen a
very huge tree while we were searching for new land at Ibang River. We’ve
jogged around this tree from sunrise to sunset, yet we can’t finish circling around
the tree’s perimeter. We had to spend the night halfway. The next day, we
continued to jog and were able to finish circling the tree at sunset.”
Listening to what Laing Ketumi and Laing Busik had said the people of Lepo’
Dempau was in awe and became speechless. So their leader, Oyau Abing Lian Padan
commanded his people to plan a trip to take a good look at this huge tree. The
brave Temuing Sedek then set up eight days for the people to prepare their food
supply and other necessities for the important trip.
