Tolat 8: Lepo’ Dempau Tai Oyan Kelempit


            Un dau lepo’ kado’ ibo’ apan de dau tai ti kelempit didai re oo, pesingket dau re pipa puun kayu bio ja. Laing Ketumi tekeli sin idan bane ja dau kepala’ kerja ceng besey inan. Laing Busik mepung buke’ belaban dau kepala’ kerja ceng besey laa. Ca liwai dau pintet asai bane, uko’ lata’ lesung re dau ketai obang pesau. Enta majo’ bali majan bane, ya dau “tup…. tum…” dau toyau ne kayu bio’ ja ngebarep, ja ne oban ketai kayu ja kelo’ ke tobang. Un dau Pompen ngajen leyran, mencam noken dalem tapen mudung toyan nebada’ ne oo, “ boka o’ kayu ji tai tobang te’ ibang tau, ja terana’ mik ke un usun oo. Boka o’ tobang te’ ibang kabing, ja terana’ mik ke tun kuun ayau ngelau monan oo”. Enta majo’ bali majan, majo’ ngalun ngepo tekun lawa’ iman, ya dau barep, ya lingai ne odai ketai tobang kayu empau malau loyan kua’ abun bora’ oyan ja. Oi...Te’ tau lote oban dau ketai tobang kayu ja. Ya kao dau du pap ujuk mentung nguok ka ne odai. Pesemaik lene dau du mikak ala’ ida oyan kelempit ka odai. Pesingket lene dau ketai du ulik engkin impa re pesemae’ ke’ oma’ te. Penco ida oyan ne dau kelempit da pa lepa.


       Meanwhile, all the strong and healthy men in the kingdom of Lepo’ Dempau had came to make shields as instructed by the seer. Every each of them stood around the perimeter of the giant tree. Laing Ketumi led the task at one side of the tree. Meanwhile, Laing Busik took the lead at the other side of the tree since the tree was so big. The people were very good at cutting tree. With every swing of their axes, the sharp edge of the metals cut through the trunk of that giant tree. After some time, they heard a loud cracking sound. The tree was about to fall down. Pompen Ngajen Leyran, the seer, foretold his phrophecy “If the tree falls to the right side that means the victory will be ours. But, if the tree falls to the left side, the victory will be in the hands of our enemies.”As soon as he finished his prophecy, the tree toppled to the ground. The tree apparently fell to the right side which means they surely will defeat their enemies this time. They cheered and clapped their hands happily. Then, they began to cut the tree into small pieces of woods. Everyone brought a fine piece of lumber that they will use to make their shield. They finished making their shield on that very day.


Tolat 9: Bika’ Ayau


          Un dau Balan Ading Tena Janan dedo Balan Komamuran oo dik, kata alut re  telu ka ne dau dedo. Ja dau redo ala’ patai Oyau Abing Lian Padan mane. Enta ne un tongep tajau pingkan, pesau ne songep mali boan. Beng osa tua’ le ne dau dedo mebek ke dalem alut ja. Ja dau dedo mecuk alut ja tai bika’ pala’ lepo te. “Bali sio keriman sio nodo ladung tadan, tai no’ adau malai bika’ kenai ayau ji, tai bika’ tai bada’ denga ke oma’ senoka’ nepan te, ke’ Lepo’ Dempau naa pingkan naa solau selawan, lepo’ kusun dempau abun bora’ oyan te”, dau redo nebada’ mentung dedo mecuk alut ja kaba’ mane. Ngena ke dempau  batu tenapan jidai ne dau dedo ka, ngajan ngena kenai du.


Chapter 9 : Enemy's Shouting

          Balan Ading Tena Janan and Balan Kumamuran were still grieving the lost of their beloved cousin. They sat near their boat and tried to figure out what to do. Then, they decided to send Oyau Abing’s body back. His head was separated from his body so they put only his body in his boat. They pushed the boat and sent it to lepo’ Dempau. “Bali Sio Keriman Sio Nodo Ladung Tadan, please bring back this sad news to the people of Lepo’ Dempau, the kingdom beyond the white clouds.” said both of them while continued pushing the boat downstream through the brown still river. Then, they sat on a big flat rock while waiting for the people from the kingdom to come.

          Ya siiii dau ketai alut jidai ne pecuk kaba’ songai kanan te. Bayu ne dau je put alut ja. Uko’ cuk alut pasa re ne dau ketai alut ja sao kaba’. Enta ne majo’ bali majan bane, abik ne alut ja re ke tuun panyun loran, ke oma’ senoka’ nepan, oma’ tudun pasun langan, Lepo’ Dempau naa pingkan naa solau selawan te. Un oban dau Buring leto miping petekaing bane, tai mue’ koden ke tuun te dalau ja. To’ dau-e taan kita alut ja mane, malai le keyta poyan alut Oyau Abing lian padan, Alut kalong maan dau ja, oban alut de’ mao’ tau man pungu udip deypan.
          Naat mane, ngeterai le ne kita osa enta un ulu dalem alut ja bane. Bisau ne uko’ senudup ayau lesan sangan re dau Buring miping petekaing ka bane. “adai…yai, adai…yai,adai…yai, adai…yai, arui…yui, arui..yui, arui..yui” dau kenai kika’ buring ne ngalang lasan oma’ luan ka bane, pedaidadai le dau. Enta ne oban e nuen ketai taa e pebo oban bisau ale’. Malep mecep mane uko’ mentem ngelidem, uko’ alep kena ojan re keyta. Ya dau nai kelonan kado’ ibo’ apan ne petoyen bane. “Yu ne je’ baan dau o’ ne buring miping petekaing?” dau du kiya. “adai…yai,adai…yai, adai…yai, aroi..yui, aroi…yui, aroi…yui, Oyau Abing Lian Padan matai ke tuun panyun loran te…aruiii..yui,adai..yai” dau Buring ne uko’ ca belekotau bekan re ke’ lasan ka. Ja dau ketai kelonan petoyen ke’ tuun panyun loran te. Naat bane, na….ya lekey ne manai koley kusun lasan… oban matai pejelaan. “Oi adi beliau lene taan iko’ meki layan keyta poyan. Aie lebo le ne oban o’ sata’ tai denta’ kuun ayau bawa kapan. Yu ne kada oban o’ ketai nyeripa ayau mentung  tengen ruun ngan. Aek ne oban ayau ngelau monan je’ oban ngolep mesau tongep tajau pingkan ji ne” dau du ne ka. Penco dau ketai Balan Nyanting minjung muan nekigan jatung adau malai bika’ ayau ne dalau ja. Ceng kiep bolan cep ruun nalan le bane, sangan ne osey mesat bawey jelemujan, osey Oyau Abing Lian Padan ka bane. Oban lepa ule’ mung ne oban dau lepo’ kado’ suang kapan de tai ti kelempit didai koma’ dalau ja. Naat keyta kenai du kelimpun bane, atek dengkep ngan gelam pepatai pepung ponan mung-mung. Beng mabun ne terega uko’ tung nanga piling popa dempau bila batu tosan re. Beng ngecak mung ne keyta poyan du ka odai.

          The boat went steadily down the river. It moved fast, as fast as the racing boat although it was only blown by the wind. It didn’t take long for the boat to reach Lepo’ Dempau. The thin and skinny Buring was washing her pots by the river when she saw Oyau Abing’s boat.
           She was horrified and stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Oyau Abing’s body without his head in the boat. This terrifying scene made her blood run cold so she run back while her mouth babbling “adai…yai, adai…yai, adai…yai, aroi...yui, aroi…yui, aroi…yui…aruiii...yui, adai..yai.” She continued shouting and walked fast towards the houses. She was so shocked and panicked that she didn’t even realize that her ta-a (an open ended cloth that women wear as skirt) fell of showing her private part. Other people were curious and came to ask her “What are you talking about, Buring?”
 “Adai…yai, adai…yai, adai…yai, aroi...yui, aroi…yui, aroi…yui, Oyau Abing Lian Padan has died! See for yourself. His body is in the boat. Aruiii…yui, adai...yai” said Buring still in panic.
            The people of Lepo’ Dempau rushed to the river bank and saw the body of their beloved leader in the boat. “Oi…what had happened to you? Why were you easily defeated by the enemy? Why did you dare to face the enemies alone? Who did this to you?” said the people in deep sorrow. Balan Nyanting didn’t take long to grieve as he quickly sounded the alarm for war by hitting the ‘jatung adau’ (a wood with hole used like a bell). All men in Lepo’ Dempau heard and understand the calling. In the nick of time, they gathered at Oyau Abing’s veranda. They brought their shields and equipped themselves with complete war attire. They all looked so brave and ready to take revenge on their enemy.

Tolat 10    : Lepo’ Dempau Noa Bika’

           Ja ne dau ketai mung keto’ peniga Lepo’ Dempau Naa Pingkan ja metik Alo Kurung Keno atung bodak lodan ja mane. Enta majan dau le, abik ne dau re kata Balan Ading tena janan dedo padik ke’ daya songai ja te. Ja ne dau re mutu ke redo ne ka. Penco dau ketai re pawat tai pita oban lisa’ ketai ayau Lepo’ Denta’ Tungun Eyman didai kelap bane. Un oo, enta ne dau repat tego’ oban ketai lisa’. Ti lan pe dau tai re nyanam tipo bakey ngan mudung ke tai naat oban ketai janan ayau mane, enta pe un jawa ketai re taan oban ketai du. Un dau Balan Nyanting minjung muan mane, “beng ca le je’ ke mencam melingai ketai asat ayau di keji. Engkey sik Oko Pampo dedo Oko Pompen?” dau e mane. Ja dau ca mipa, “ya lepe sik kenai dedo metik ole baco’. Ya lepe’ napa dedo ke ibang songai ji kaba’ ne ole”. “Boka meka dik, perena’ ne tepat ngena kenai dedo. Engkey pe un aek me tepat de mencam baya’ oban ketai ayau di” dau Balan Nyanting kida.


Tolat 10    : Lepo’ Dempau Yelled

          All the best men in Lepo’ Dempau travelled upstream. Soon enough they arrived at the place where Balan Ading and his brother were waiting patiently. Both of them told precisely what had happened to Oyau Abing. The big group split up to find the trails of their enemies, which were the people from Lepo’ Denta’ (on earth kingdom). But, they couldn’t find any trails of their enemies. They searched everywhere, high and low for any trails of the enemies but failed. “There’s one way that we might find them. Where are the strong and wise fortune tellers, Oko Pampo’and Oko Pompen Ngajen Leyran? ” asked Balan Nyanting. One man from the crowd replied, “They were right behind us not long ago.” “So we will wait for them.” said Balan Nyanting.                               
          Enta tene majan mane, idi ne ke meleng sik alo songai ja. Matung ke daya dau alo songai. Koda naat kaba’ mane, oi ya kenai Oko Pampo dedo Pompen neken ca puging laran. Oban beng nao merut puun laran ne oban dedo kabak te. Enta ne un alut de’ oban naung ke lepo’ te du moo engkin mung. “Su, aie nyaik adung lem pat? Engkey nem tai pabat ayau da?” dau Oko Pompen kida ka bane. “ Ek tai mano’ oko, pekep mung ne oban lisak ayau. Enta ne un ek de mencam ketai pabat oban ketai re” dau re mipa ya. “Oi..ayen tosa su”. Ja dau Oko Pompen menat baing e mane. Sey pekata mekiluk langit, ja sey melingai naat ke dap baing ja re. “Oi su, mepan ne pen ik su” dau e ke’ du mane. Na, petina le ne sik du ketai  mepan pen Oko Pompen laa. “Enta yu su, oko kam Pampo ngetut sin tidai, oban sakit batek oman lia, pit pe balo’ oko kam ja beketut sin pe bekidai” dau-e ke’ du mane. Na, ja le sik du makang tai mepan suut bio’ ja mane. Tai ngan paam-paam pentung  jaga’-jaga’ ne ja. Dalau dau pelemebup le pepan  mane, ya dau “gem” uko’ leka meriem bulo’ re laa mane, un oo, tut muang meka le ne. “Oi..su, te’ tai mudung ke iut songai ji le oban lepo’ ayau di. Ida mekep mung ne oban janan-janan de’ ida baya didai’” dau oko Pompen ne ka.

          Not long after that, they noticed that the water level suddenly rose. The current strangely flowed the opposite way. Two giant men came approaching from downstream. Those two were Oko Pampuk and Oko Pompen. They rode a big tree trunk that they managed to pull by the side of the river because there was not enough boat for all of them. They used the tree trunk as their boat and the branches as the paddle. “Why are you still sitting here? Why don’t you go after the enemies?” asked Oko Pompen. “How can we go after them? They didn’t leave any trace at all. No one knows how to find them.” replied one from the crowd. “Oi…don’t worry my child” said Oko Pompen while pulling out his machete. He swung it to the air and tried to forecast through the machete. “Oi...My child. Please, hit my bottom.”Oko Pompen requested. That was the prerequisite to do the forecast. “Don’t worry my child. Oko Pampo farted that day because he had stomachache as he had too much chilli earlier. I am sure it won’t happen again.” explained Oko Pompen as he noticed that the people were hesitating to do as he requested. So the people had no choice but to hit Oko Pompen’s big fat bottom. This time they were being extra cautious. They hit his bottom hard and quickly. Then, “poooooof” Oko Pompen had a big explosive fart just like the sound of bamboo cannon. Luckily, no faeces came along this time. “Oi…my child, our enemies are at the other side of the mountain near a small river. That’s where they are right now. They removed all their tracks and close every single route that they took.”, said Oko Pompen.

 
Tolat 11: Oyau Abing Nompak Mudip

          Ja ne dau ketai kelonan kado’ ibo’ apan poka ka odai. Nga’u dau ketai re abe’ ke aba’ lepo’ ja te. Ngeline’ todo ke ca keliko’ kaba’ lepo’ ja ne dau re. Penco dau re cuk Padan Oley entuk tetey tido’ ojan dedo Laing Tit tejulit nogan ait ke’ bena loran tai melip kise’ ayau da. Tai dua da abe’ ke lepo’ te bane, ui selawan le dau toyau sampe orau. Kancet ne Lepo Enta’ Tungun Eyman alem ja oban sae’ sokat nai engkin ulu Oyau Abing lian padan ule’. Ida ngeriding ke ca belanyat ke belua’ osey Lencau Ca mata aya pelesan lene dau ulu ja. Kancet nida neliling ulu ja ka. Nisep jakan, matai buin ngan oman bio’ ne lepo’ ja ngeramai oban sokat matai peniga Lepo’ Dempau ja. Ya dau Padan Oley dedo Laing Tit ngena ketai re lunto’ mung ne. Ngeliep bep le ne dau du, ja ne dau ketai dedo nyelem tai ala’ ulu jidai re ke’ belanyat je nentang ke belua’ osey ja te.

Chapter 11: Oyau Abing Was Revived

           Everyone went to the place mentioned by Oko Pompen. It was already dark when they almost reached the place. So, they decided to spend the night not far from the enemy’s village. They sent Padan Oley and Laing Tit spy on the enemies. The nearer they were to the village the louder the sound of sape’ they heard. The people of Lepo’ Dentak (the humans on earth) were having a feasta because they were able to bring Oyau Abing’s head as a trophy. They put Oyau Abing’s head in a rattan bag known as belanyat and place it in the middle of Lencau Ca’s veranda. They kancet (traditional kenyah’s dance) circling the head. They drink liquor, slaughter pigs and had a big meal that night. They celebrated their victory in killing Oyau Abing, the powerful leader of Lepo Dempau. Padan Oley and Laing Tit waited patiently until everyone was asleep. The people of Lepo’ Dentak were all sleeping safe and sound. Both of them tip toed and managed to get Oyau Abing’s head.

          Ketai dedo engkin ulu Oyau Abing ne ke’ ata empun tene, ja dau re petuk ulu ngan osa e. Oban ida engkin pe oban osa Oyau Abing keja. Dau re mube’ telang sio keriman mentung re ngempo laset miya lote, ja ne dau kenai Oyau Abing Lian Padan betik ka odai. Sae’ mung sae’ mongan ne dau du. “Oi senganak mung mongan, na’ pik oban tai tun kelukun kuun ayau Lencau Ca mata aya pelesan re dik, masa’ oban lieng kuun tuno’ we’ mik. Nempam oo, ayen masa ake’ kiya” dau-e ne me du mung ka.

        They brought back the head and attached it back to the body. Fortunately, they brought along Oyau Abing’s body with them. They pour the magical water, telang sio keriman, while blowing air through his nose. Mericulously, Oyau Abing came back to life. The entire troops were so happy. “My beloved people, I’ve been taken down to the world of the dead by our enemy, Lencau Ca. This happened probably because my mother had cursed me that day. Tomorrow, don’t try to fight Lencau Ca.It will be my turn to take him down.” said Oyau Abing to all his people.

 
Tolat 12: Pepatai Pepung Ponan

           Dalau tading tekuok yap aung ontan mempam oo, dalau silau nyarat jima, jane dau repat ngayau lepo’ ja. Atek uko’ yap peterep kusun lasan, re ne kise’ du pepatai pepung ponan, pepepung pekelirong aran, tipo lepo ja. Pesugun kusun langit ancan dau toyau kangit ngan kika’ du tau ja, main-main ne moo pekenaan le ne. Un de nangey, un de mi’a, un de nyat tolong, dau kekuk asu, dau kuek buin, dau kiok yap. Un dau Oyau abing bane, beng telit pala’ Lencau Ca mata aya pelesan tua’ ne dau ketai e. “Tuwi ne to  ke ngetisen aek je atek ta’u man pungu udip deypan odai” dau Oyau Abing kiya ka bane. “ Oi, ayen o’ kada nengkung neka’ lengiang lobang tana’, malap pesau tongep tajau pingkan dua liwai oo” dau lencau ca mentung dau-e gera’ nyelopo Oyau Abing ka mane. Ja ne dau ketai dedo pekesen ka bane.Ya liling ne uko’ asing tengit kusun lasan, ya perep ne uko’ nyiwan mekep kepa’ buan, atek kua’-kua’ sangkit, kua’ barek, kua’ lajam kise’ kala bane. Uko’ bekilet ngecet kena ke ojan re, uko’ bereygang kawang diman, puit kempau langit ancan bane, pencem dalem tana’ kanan. Tai majan dedo pepatai pepung ponan ne oo, oban tai lama’ ne lencau ca, uko’ bio’ ca suat siit le dau suat kenta’ belat iman mane, ya lekey ya tobey ne manai koley buding tian. Ja ne dau Oyau Abing ngina’ ngolep mesau tongep tajau pingkan bane. Serengan ja lote dau tengo lalo’ lepo’ dempau naa pingkan oban menang ka oo ja.

Chapter 12: The War

        On the first rooster crows, right after the sunrise the next morning, Oyau Abing and his people attacked the kingdom of Lepo’ Dentak. Just like the rooster fight, they fought bravely and vigorously. There were no places to run. They brought war to every corner of Lepo’ Dentak. The sounds of people crying and shouting filled the day. The swines were squeaking panicly, the dogs barked eagerly, the chickens were clucking and crowing chaoticly. Oyau Abing headed directly towards Lencau Ca, the head of Lepo’ Dentak. “Today you will face your destiny!” said Oyau Abing challenging his enemy. “How dare you came here and challenge me! Do you not afraid to lose your head again?” said Lencau Ca in a sarcastic tone while laughing at him. They moved closer to each other. In a blink of an eye, like the top spinning, both of them fought ferociously and skillfully. They both fought tooth and nails against each other. Just as fast as the lightning strikes, they jumpped high to the sky and even went deep underground. Lencau Ca became tired and gasped convulsively for breath since the fight was so intense. Oyau Abing managed to make a small cut at the back of Lencau Ca’s calf but that was enough to make him weak and fell abruptly to the ground. Then he beheaded him. In that very moment, the people of Lepo’ Dempau cheered and shout for their victory.

          Pesingket le ne dau du ala’ salut ngan leto tega lepo’ ja engkin ule’. “Engkey sik Oko Pampo dedo ku” dau palai mane. “Dik awai pe?” ja dau ketai re mita dedo ne oo. Naat mane, beng litut ne alo songai, uko’ baan babui nekina’re kita. Koda naat ke daya mane, ya sik kelonan kua’-kua’ lata’ poyan payo’, pesemena’, pepeseng, pepengen ngan pedakep ke’ alo songai ja. Enta ne ida tisen je’ engkey Pampo’ ngan Pompen Lepo’ Dempau laa oban kua’-kua’ tonyang ngan kua’ poyan ngan anun Lepo Denta’ Tungun Eyman lote kise’ poyan re. “Je’ engkey Pampo’ Pompen Lepo Dempau” dau re kida mane, “oi…ake su” dau redo mane, penco dau du meca’ anun lepo’ du da ne.

          They took any children and also beautiful women of that kingdom that they wish to bring home. “Where did Oko Pampo and Oko Pompen go?” ask somebody from the crowd but no one seems to know their whereabout. As they were about to go searching for them suddenly they saw the river turned from crystal clear to brown. Hence, they looked upstream and saw some giant-like men punching, strangling and fighting each other furiously. Two of them looked like Oko Pampo’ and Oko Pompen but they were not sure because they were covered in mud and their faces looked almost alike and also similar in size as well. “Which are Oko Pompen and Oko Pampo’of the Lepo’ Dempau?” asked the people of Lepo’ Dempau. “Oi…Here we are my child.” said both of them and some people of Lepo’ Dempau hit the enemies hard with their spear.

          Na... menang bio’ ne Lepo’ Dempau naa pingkan naa solau selawan ka. Salai mung ne laki lepo’ ja. De’ naung dik, leto, kelonan mukun ngan  anak tua’ le. Enta pe dau re nyalai ida mung oban malan pe dau re boka nyalai abe’ leto ngan anak te. Ramai bio’ ne dau Lepo’ Dempau ca aang minggu-e oban saik menang ti ngan ayau ngelau monan da.

          That ended the war. Lepo’ Dempau Naa Pingkan won the war big time. All the men of Lepo’ Dentak had died in the battle. But they didn’t kill the women and children because it was forbidden according to the beliefs of the time. They went back to Lepo’ Dempau and held a feast for an intire week to celebrate their victory against Lepo’ Dentak.
