LONG GENG VILLAGE

A Place like no other.

Ka’ Long Geng ibang Alo Keluan ne dau re penco ngelepo’. Un to-a re nai mecin Tekulang nai ka’ Long Geng, ia ne Uloi Lian. Pengudip Badeng ka’ Long Geng un majan. Nta ne ida ngimet ke tai buau cen ja la-a oban perintah lepa nai naat ida ngan mengesahkan ida ka.

The kenyah Badeng moved from Tekulang and finally settled down at Long Geng along Keluan river. Their leader at that time was Ului Lian. Kenyah Badeng lived there for a long period of time. They didn’t even thought about moving to other places. Moreover, the government had came to that place and verified Long Geng as Kenyah Badeng land.

Perintah un ala’ ba-at keneng ida, nak sekolah, kubo’ taban ngan nai ngkin penerangan keneng perintah me ida. Un pe nai perintah ti wayang me ida. Keneng jo pengelan la-a, un pe kenai mubaligh ngkin agama Kristen ka. Kado’ pe de’ tai masuk Kristen oban gaya’ pengelan ja lebo ngan ntaun palan-palan ngan nta pakai amen uko’ baen adet Bungan. Un tepo-o, un pe palai ca’ man adet Bungan pabe’ naki.

           

The government cared about them and even built schools, clinics and explained to them about the government. People from the government also introduced new forms of entertainment such as the television to them. Christian missionaries also came and spread the christian religion to the Kenyah Badeng of Long Geng. They felt that christian beliefs were easy to follow and had no prohibition or taboo compared to the adet Bungan, which was their current belief. So, lots of them accepted the religion. Nevertheless, some of them still hold on to Adet Bungan until now.

Bolan ca sue’ pulo’, oman 1985, perintah mete’ ca Badeng cen Long Geng jadi Penghulu. Nyurang Uloi anak  Uloi Lian ne jadi Penghulu je’ ading me Badeng ne ke’ daleh Alo Baliu. Sio’ tanggal 23 bulan telu oman 1986, ja lepo’ pemung mana ngan ngerameh ia.

      On November, 1985,  the government appointed Nyurang Uloi as the Penghulu. Uloi Nyurang is the son of Ulio Lian the former leader. Nyurang Ulio is the first leader that had been elected since they moved to Long Gang. On 23^rd of March, 1986 they held a feast for the new leader.

I still remember crossing this scary bridge.

Un tepo-o nta pe ida lapen keneng sekolah re oban le toran keneng obo sekolah ja. Mencat tua’ le da’ nading tai sekolah da re tai empau kidi. Cen Long Geng ne lepo’ ilu tai tisen sekolah, kemajuan ngan tai tisen keneng usun tana’. Lepo’ tai maju keneng cara udip, pengelan ngan politik.

         

     In the year 1985, an election was held to choose a new village head to replace Nyurang Uloi who had become the Penghulu.  Nyaban Kulleh was chosen to be the new village head or Ketua Kampung .The Kenyah badeng of Long Geng had known education earlier than those who migrated to Long Busang. But, they didn’t take education seriously. There were only a few of them who went to school and excelled. In Long Geng, the Kenyah Badeng were introduced to school and started to learn about the outside world. They moved onward in their ways of living, beliefs and also politics.

            Kenyah Badeng Koyan ja ne ca tempat “skim penempatan semula” Badeng ka sungai Koyan dalem daleh Belaga. Perintah buau mung keto’ lepo’ de’ ke’ daya empeng Bakun oban du ke oyan “projek hidro” mempeng diam bakun apan de ke oyan ngan ala’ karan leterik ka. Un bang re la-a, perintah bayan keto’ mung tana’, pola, liang ngan mung keto’ de’ anun de de’ patut ida ke nyat beli/pampasan.

     
Koyan, Belaga,  is a new resettlement scheme for those who were affected by the Bakun Dam project.  The government instructed all villages located upstream of the Bakun Dam to move and so did the Kenyah Badeng of Long Geng. Fortunately, the government compensated all the land, crops, graves and all thier belongings.

            Ngan un dau atek janji perintah ke’ ida, amin mading de’ du oyan me ida da ida pupuk bayan ngan tana’ telu ekar. Eda nading terima pampasan cen oman 2001. Toa Badeng Koyan de nai serengan asat buau jane, Penghulu Nyurang Uloi ngan Ketua Kampung Nyaban Kulleh. Naki, oo lepa Penghulu Nyurang Uloi mukun, ia lepo gelaran Penghulu ngan Perintah metik Penghulu Katan Lawai saliu ia.

      
 The government promised houses for them but they have to make installment payment for the houses. The government also provided each family, three acres of land. They began to received the compensation in 2001. The leaders that led at that time were Penghulu Nyurang Uloi and the village head, Nyaban Kulleh. Now, Penghulu Nyurang Uloi has gotten old and he gave up his position. The government selected a new Penghulu, Penghulu Katan Lawai to replace him.
